The 3 Miracles of Satoshi
What Satoshi Nakamoto accomplished in the creation of Bitcoin was an economic deus ex machina - the miraculous creation of an entirely different kind of monetary system that came from a deep synthesis of the internet, cryptography, economics, computer science, mathematics, and human psychology. The economic success of Bitcoin today (the world's 6th largest monetary asset as of Oct. 31, 2024) speaks to the innovation, power, and purity inherent in its beginnings.
It takes two miracles for the Catholic Church to consider someone a saint. In the Bible, Jesus was known to have performed around 40 miracles. While Satoshi was not a traditional religious figure, the potency of their spiritual legacy falls somewhere between a saint and Jesus. The 3 Miracles of Satoshi are a core mythos that will shed light on this legacy by revealing the sacred underpinnings of Bitcoin's origins.
Miracle #1: The Creation
On Jan. 3, 2009, an unknown programmer named Satoshi Nakamoto launched Bitcoin, the first decentralized blockchain cryptocurrency in history. Bitcoin gives every human being the opportunity for economic sovereignty independent of governments and centralized banks. It is money that is incorruptible because it is controlled by an open source, transparent protocol that creates consensus and alchemizes diverse motivations in order to expand and maintain a system that benefits all parties.
Bitcoin solved a host of problems that had plagued previous attempts at digital money that most experts in the field thought were unsolvable. By utilizing a difficulty-adjusted proof of work mechanism to secure a decentralized network governed by an open-source protocol, Bitcoin fixes double spending (digital money previously could be easily duplicated), lowers transaction costs by removing a centralized authority (like banks), protects the right to transact without any intermediaries, and creates a finite money system (21M total supply) that prevents inflation and currency debasement. Bitcoin is the soundest, most principled and most resilient money system (it is protected from tampering by a massive 700 exahashes of computational power which is more compute than Google, Amazon and Microsoft combined) ever created and is the most important economic innovation of the last 2,000 years. The reason Bitcoin today has a market cap of over $1T is because it is built upon economically and mathematically sound foundations that brilliantly utilize the innovations of modern civilization (i.e. the internet, cryptography, computer science).
In early 2011 Satoshi disappeared without a trace, leaving the ongoing development of Bitcoin in the hands of a small group of dedicated programmers. He asked for no accolades nor praise. He just vanished and in doing so, ensured the decentralization of the protocol that would not have to live in the shadow of its founder. I do not believe there is another figure in human history that has created something so innovative and globally impactful as Satoshi and has simply relinquished all control over it.
The Miracle of Creation is an act of world changing innovation, economic freedom and true humility.
Miracle #2: The Gift
During Satoshi’s first two years developing the Bitcoin network, it was discovered through blockchain forensics that they personally mined and held over 1 million Bitcoin. Today, this would be worth more than 70 Billion USD and make Satoshi one of the richest people in the world (and perhaps in all of human history if Bitcoin continues on the same trajectory averaging about 40% price appreciation every year since inception).
Despite this vast accumulation of wealth, Satoshi has never sold, traded or transferred any of the Bitcoin he accumulated (other than a few coins he sent to early developers like Hal Finney in order to test the network). Billions of dollars of Bitcoin have been left untouched for more than a decade and a half (again everything is transparently tracked on the blockchain so we know this for certain). Satoshi famously was quoted saying, “Lost coins only make everyone else’s coins worth slightly more. Think of it as a donation to everyone." In essence, "Satoshi's treasure" of 1M+ Bitcoin are a donation to the network, effectively reducing the supply of total Bitcoin and gifting its value back to us all.
The Miracle of the Gift is a deep transmission of generosity and abundance. There has not been another example in history of any human creating so much wealth and simply and quietly giving it ALL away. This act creates a massive field of overflow and generosity that vibrates at the core of the money Satoshi invented.
Miracle #3: The Mystery
More than 15 years after the birth of Bitcoin, its creator Satoshi Nakamoto still remains anonymous. Given our modern world of government surveillance, digital forensics, artificial intelligence, etc., this simple fact is almost unbelievable. And yet, perhaps this is Satoshi's final miraculous act, not just a demonstration of personal privacy, but a means through which we may access a deeper dimension of their identity only accessible in the absence of a human founder.
Without a personal identity, Satoshi becomes a mystery, a mythic figure and their life becomes an archetype of humanity that can take on multidimensional meaning. Suddenly, it is possible that "We are all Satoshi" as the first Satoshi Nakamoto memorial statue in Budapest claims. Satoshi Nakamoto becomes the name of a legend that changes how we understand Bitcoin forever.
Why was this name chosen? The mysterious founder of Bitcoin could have used any pseudonym, but he chose Satoshi Nakamoto which is of Japanese origin. Some commentators have translated this name as "central intelligence" claiming that the CIA was involved in Bitcoin's creation. However, if we trace this name back to its Japanese/Chinese characters, we also find another interpretation.
Satoshi can be represented as 悟 or "bodhi" which in sanskrit means "spiritual awakening or enlightenment." Nakamoto (中本) has two characters, 中 meaning central or middle and 本 indicating origin or roots and even looks like a tree pictorially. Together 中本 (Nakamoto) means “central origin” or “(one who lives) in the middle”. In other words, as a mythic figure the name Satoshi Nakamoto points to a spiritual awakening from a central source, the enlightenment that lives in our divine core. This is the true vibration of who Satoshi was and where Bitcoin actually originated from and aligns with the miraculous nature of their story.
One more thing.
After satoshi disappeared, the Bitcoin community started to call the smallest units of Bitcoin (1/100M Bitcoin) satoshis. This seemingly minor nod to Bitcoin's creator takes on another dimension in light of a mythic understanding of Satoshi's namesake. Each atom of the Bitcoin therefore is made up of 100 million satoshis or "atoms of awakening" and thus the entire network is pulsing with trillions of particles expressing this vibration. This is a profound transfiguration of how Bitcoin exists in its archetypal essence and a foundation for the next revelations of the Bitcoin Mysteries.
